a friend of mine has a mazda miata and one day it just wouldnt start i personally have not looked at it but he told me its not getting spark passed the coil to the plugs, is there a common problem with miatas that do not allow you to get spark to the plugs but to the coil?

Where did you test spark from? The plug that goes to the coil pack or the pack itself? It makes no sense to get spark from the pack but for some reason it won't travel through the spark plug wire.

Check the main relay. My NA did the same thing, took me forever to figure it out.

thats a problem i have not yet encountered with my miata...as always check grounds...its always the grounds lol
